Social Protection in the Pacific. A Review of its Adequacy and Role in Addressing Poverty

The purpose of this report is to facilitate further debate on the adequacy of social protection in the Pacific. It provides a summary of some of the existing evidence on poverty, vulnerability and inequality and highlights the importance of understanding the nature of poverty in the Pacific and its implications for designing policy responses. The report examines some of the factors placing stress on Pacific social protection systems and discusses whether or not informal social existing formal social protection systems and discusses some of the potential gaps.

Pacific Labour Market Scenarios. Economic Crisis, Climate Change & Decent Work

World Economic Situation and Prospects 2010

The world economy is on the mend. After a sharp, broad and synchronized global downturn in late 2008 and early 2009, an increasing number of countries have registered positive quarterly growth of gross domestic product (GDP), along with a notable recovery in international trade and global industrial production. But the recovery is uneven and conditions for sustained growth remain fragile.

Global Social Policy Forum: Children and the Economic Crisis

In the Asia and the Pacific region, where almost 650 million people live in poverty (ESCAP, 2008) – on US$1 a day or less – the impact of the food and economic crises has been devastating and years of progress in poverty alleviation, child survival and education attainment are in jeopardy. Recent analysis suggests that a 10% increase in food prices could push an estimated 105 million more people into poverty – a reversal of about seven years’ work of poverty reduction (Ivanic and Martin, 2008).

USP Working Paper: Monetary Policy Response of Pacific Island Countries to Global Economic Downturn

This paper analyses the monetary policy options open to six PICs, which have independent currencies under different exchange rate regimes. Except PNG, which switched on to a flexible exchange regime in 1994, the other five PICs namely, Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu, have fixed exchange rate regimes. The policy response naturally has to vary with the nature of exchange rate regimes. Our analysis, accordingly, undertakes an evaluation of the measures undertaken so far by the central banks of the six PICs.

Global economic downturn, food crisis and fuel price instability: exposures and impacts on child nutrition and health in East Asia and Pacific regions

Experiences of the 1997 financial crisis in East Asia provide strong evidence that there are serious risks that the current food, fuel, economic and financial crisis will affect child health and nutrition in the region. Using information available on the 1997 crisis, this paper evaluates its effects on nutrition status, reportable diseases, immunization status, and child mortality.
